In a remarkable showcase of environmental responsibility, more than 1.6 million used aluminum beverage cans were collected by elementary students across the United States in a national initiative known as the 2 Million Cans Recycling Contest, led by the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) and the non-profit Recycling Is Like Magic!
The contest, running from October 2024 to April 2025, engaged students from 18 schools in 12 U.S. states, challenging them to collect and recycle empty aluminum cans while raising awareness of metal recycling’s impact.
Real Impact: Economic & Environmental Benefits
Through the sale of used beverage cans (UBCs) to local scrap yards, participating schools collectively raised over $26,000, funds now reinvested into education. Just as significantly, recycling aluminum instead of producing new metal helped reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95%.
“This contest proves that hands-on recycling education can drive meaningful results,” said Scott Breen, CMI’s Senior VP of Sustainability. “Metal cans are not only highly recyclable—they’re valuable and widely accepted by recyclers nationwide.”
